lib-web-cats – library web sites and catalogues

I have found a very useful site for researching which libraries around the world are using Spydus. Its lib-web-cats (library web sites and catalogs) and is a free directory of libraries throughout the world. It is part of Library Technology Guides site.

“The lib-web-cats directory is mainly used by the general public to find libraries and their catalogs on the Web, but it also serves as a tool for tracking automation systems.”

After doing an advanced search I’ve found 788 items where the library automation system used is Spydus. 311 listed just for Australia (this included all branches I think)
I will definately be exploring this in more detail once I finish my study next week!

The Librarians on ABC

Are there any Librarians or Library workers left in OZ who don’t know that the show airs tomorrow night?
With all the talk it has generated, I wonder if it will live up to people’s expectations…

New Prague Library

This has to be the strangest Library I have ever seen!

Future Systems won the widely contested international competition to design the National Library of the Czech Republic, it is due for completion in 2011.

“The 15m-deep, single-storey basement has a state-of-the-art automated storage-and-retrieval system for 10 million books. The upper levels house an auditorium and office space, and on the top floor is a café, reading room and deck for viewing Prague landmarks”

Bye Bye Dewey

It was interesting to read from Library Link of the day that the Gilbert Library in Arizona is about to open it doors next month with it’s entire collection not categorized with the Dewey System!

Instead the collection will be presented similar to a book store with books shelved by topic.

This is bound to make a few people squirm, but I predict the public will love it!!

Spydus Links

My library has been running Spydus (Integrated Library Management System) for a few months now. For easy access, Iv’e created a page that lists all the online catalogues for South Australian Spydus users.
I have also put all the Libraries onto a Google Map, which you can find here.

Let me know if I have missed anyone 🙂
